San Pedro

(Lake Atitlan)

Everyone going to the lake wants to go immediately to San Pedro. Well, not everyone, some pick one of the small communities that ring the lake to spend some quiet time there. That's not San Pedro. That more a party type of place, if you know what I mean. So it's real popular with the younger set.

The day after the next I got on a boat and headed for San Pedro, on the far side of the lake. The place everyone raves about

While sitting there waiting for the boat to depart, I took in the surroundings
There are a number of small communities around the lake, all with hostels or guesthouses

San Pedro docks

There are some very steep hills to climb, and I could see already that the majority of visitors stayed by the shore
On top, things leveled off, and I saw that I was walking toward a market - it was market day!
And got myself some freshly cut mango
The village elders are very much revered by the rest of the population
It's those pants, I am sure of it
The expressions of those two tell me that there probably was a baby in that bundle

Going behind the market, I got to the central square, at the edge of which this enterprising woman made a business that put every other one to shame. I, too, bought my smoothie from her. She was mobbed until she finally ran out of fruit. I noticed that she asked me, a visitor, about the amount of sugar. The locals got the full amount, it was a lot. Just 'pocito' for me. Gracias.

I love that excited expression on the little one. The crowds, the colors, the smells, the sounds - what an adventure

Yup! Those pants again. Gave him a couple of bucks and he was very happy. He grabbed the Lee Child book I was reading, sitting there drinking my smoothie, and read the title to me. Pretty amusing guy.

That would be St. Peter. There are fish on his robe. Don't know about the chicken, must be a local thing
